Why maintenance matters
A little routine care keeps your appliances quieter, safer, and more efficient—especially high-end built-ins and European brands. Here are some essential appliance maintenance tips to help protect your investment and avoid surprise breakdowns.
Refrigerator care is vital for longevity, especially for built-ins. Vacuum condenser coils every 6 months (every 3 if you have pets) because restricted airflow forces the compressor to overwork. Keep door gaskets clean with mild soap and water; replace them if they’re cracked or not sealing. Set temperatures right: 37–40°F (fridge) and 0°F (freezer) because colder isn’t always better. For ice makers, use a filter rated for your water quality and change it on schedule.
For dishwashers, including panel-ready and integrated models, regular dishwasher cleaning is important. Rinse the filter monthly to prevent odors and spray-arm clogs. Run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner once a month. Use the right detergent (tabs or powder for your model); too much soap can lead to cloudy glass and residue.
Oven maintenance is crucial as well. Check burner flames (gas should be steady and mostly blue); yellow tips suggest cleaning or adjustment. Avoid foil liners that can block vents and damage finishes. When using the self-clean feature, remove racks if the manual advises, as high heat can discolor them.
For washers and dryers, including Speed Queen, run a tub-clean cycle monthly for your washer and leave the door ajar after use to reduce mildew. Clean the dryer lint screen after every load and have the vent professionally cleaned yearly (sooner with long runs or multiple bends) for improved performance and safety.
Water quality matters; hard water leaves mineral deposits that affect ice makers, dishwashers, and steam ovens. If you see spots, scale, or slow fill, ask us about filters or descaling service.
Seasonal checklist (Spring & Fall):
- Vacuum refrigerator coils
- Test fridge/freezer temperatures
- Clean dishwasher filter & run a cleaner
- Run washer tub-clean; check hoses for bulges/leaks
- Clean dryer vent (pro service recommended)
- Inspect range hood filters; wash or replace
- Check GFCI outlets around wet areas
When to call a professional:
- Repeated tripping breakers, burning smells, or water leaks
- Built-in refrigerator warm zones or rapid ice buildup
- Dryer taking longer than one cycle (possible vent restriction)
- Error codes—especially on European brands
- Any gas appliance issues (ignition, flame color, or odors)
Pro Tip: If we determine an appliance isn’t repairable, we can quote a professional installation on a new unit and credit your diagnostic toward the install.
